Happy colouring!

Ok so every time I would go to Amazon this book would always pop up as a recommended buy, but there were never any images so I wasn't too sure about it and while the cover was cool, without seeing inside it still wasn't enough to draw me in. Luckily, thanks to Perigee Books, they sent it to me for review! Each page is by a different well known or underground artist. And I have to say, it's a doozy of a colouring book--- in a good and bad way. It was definitely NOT what I expected at all. It's a very artistic and diverse book, however you really do need a HUGE imagination from an artist's perspective to appreciate the quality of the images. I'm simply a colorista, not an art gallery advocate. Therefore there are some pictures in here that I just really don't find any interest in colouring at all and I found myself saying to quite a few pages "Why would I want to colour that?". Don't get me wrong, there are SOME that I find entertaining enough to colour, but the majority confirms my decision that I probably wouldn't spend the money on it. Now in saying that, each page is a different artist's work, and there's talent in every one, no doubt! It's very contemporary so if you're into that sort of thing then this is definitely for you! And while some images made me chuckle, others are a bit dark and may be a bit too much for kids. If my daughter was 12 and wanted it, I'd probably remove some of the pages before giving it to them. Every parent is different in how they control what their children look at, so be wary and look through the images first before handing it off to your child. Some were a bit "WTF" even to me and I'm the wife of a sailor. My tolerance is extremely high for that sort of thing LOL. But again, it's all in the name of art so keep an open mind. Overall it's a great quality colouring book in that aspect. It's pretty thick, with 256 pages, and a decent sized containing one sided prints which is great since the paper is kind of thin. Markers are most definitely an option, just be sure to put some scrap paper between the pages. There are so many different types of illustrations, from simple to complex, and realistic to cartoon-ish. This book is 100% the definition of variety and diversity. It's a lovely mix to suit any mood or colorista's expertise level. Take a look inside! So now it's up to YOU to decide if this is a book that fancies you. Is it your style, your taste in art? If so go for it! I definitely recommend this to the artists out there and you can purchase Outside the Lines HERE on Amazon. Thank you to Perigee Books for sending me this for review, and while not my cup of tea, I will say they definitely have a unique colouring book unlike any other out there!

Interesting review. I live how you tempered your negative feedback. I agree that this wouldn't be a book I'd enjoy. If the pics you posted are an indication I think I'd only use about 1 in 10 pages. Pity as the cover was promising and you do get a lot of pages for your money

The "Colorista"I'm Kourtney, and I'm a mother of two litle girls and the wife of a Navy sailor. I review colouring books and products for publishers and art supply companies to give my Coloristas a guide to buying and growing their collections. And of course I love to colour any chance I get (mostly when the kids are asleep!)
